The 10 year war that shocked Australia

Actor Vince Colosimo as Alphonse Gangitano
The 10 year feud that shocked Australia started on the 7th of February 1995 when Alphonse Gangitano shot Gregory Workman dead for no real reason. (Alphonse was part of a crew named by the media the "Carton Crew" this crew consisted of Alphonse Gangitano, Jason Moran, Mark Moran, Lewis Moran, Mick Gatto, Graham Kinniburgh and Mario Condello) This sparked a chain reaction that would see 36 people dead. Alphonse Gangitano was charged with the murder of Gregory Workman but never went to trial due to the two female witness's recanting their evidence. In the Mini-series the two witnesses are named as Taylor Randel and Sister Ella Randel. Both were in witness protection after giving statements in relation to the murder of Gregory Workman. It is said that they became disenchanted with the police protection program and phoned Alphonse Gangitanos right-hand man Jason Moran. The sisters were then picked up and taken to see lawyer George Defteros who recorded the sisters recanting there statements they made on the night of the 7th of February 1995. Both Taylor and Ella were both flown overseas all expenses paid by Alphonse Gangitano.

Actor Les Hill as Jason Moran
With Taylor and Ella Randel out of the picture Alphonse had beaten a murder charge. However it had taken its toll emotionally and financially. Alphonse Gangitano was known as the Black Prince of Lygon Street. He loved the notoriety and wanted to keep the crown. So on the night of the 19th of December 1995 Alphonse and right-hand man Jason Moran went to a King Street sports bar nightclub to collect a debt. However they ended up trashing the bar and assaulting 13 people. Alphonse was arrested at the scene however Jason got away. The CCTV footage from the sports bar did not show the face of Jason so they had nothing on him. They decided to get some proof that Jason was with Alphonse that night and went and seen Jason's driver Carl Williams. They told Carl that they knew Jason was at the bar and just wanted to know where he dropped Jason off. Carl told them he had dropped Jason back at his place. This gave them the proof to arrest Jason. Alphonse pleaded guilty to the King Street brawl which implicated Jason who had pleaded not guilty.
On the night of 16th of January 1998 Alphones Gangitano was shot dead in his home in Templestowe. In Underbelly they show that Graham Kinniburgh member of the "Carlton Crew" and good friend of Alphonse came over and as he went into the house he left the door slightly open. Allowing Jason Moran, to enter the house and walk up to Alphonse and shoot him dead. Graham Kinniburgh then removed the security tapes and left. No one was ever charged with the murder of Alphonse Gangitano.
